Questions coaches often ask
Coaching track of multiple sessions — invoice upfront or after each session?
Both work, depending on your cash flow and the trust with your coachee. Invoicing the whole track upfront gives you certainty; per session afterwards is more comfortable for the coachee. A middle path is a 50% deposit at the start and the rest at the end. Whatever you choose: state it clearly in your quote before you start.
Employer pays for employee coaching — who goes on the invoice?
The employer, because they're the business client. The invoice lists the employer's details (name, address, registration / VAT number). In the description you can reference the coachee ("Coaching track for [employee name], 6 sessions") so the employer knows what the invoice is for.
Is there a VAT exemption for coaching?
Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Recognised medical care (including certain forms of psychotherapy) is VAT-exempt in the Netherlands. Regular business or life coaching usually falls under the 21% rate. With a specific qualification (BIG registration, NIP, NOBCO) and delivering medical care, an exemption may apply. Ask your accountant or the tax authority for your specific case.
