Questions tutors often ask
Per hour or per month?
Per month with the lessons given is usually clearest for parents. One invoice per month with a line per lesson ("Maths, March 4, 1 hour") or a line "4 maths lessons March at €X". For a flat monthly fee, use a recurring invoice — it goes out automatically on the first or last day of the month.
Parents pay for the kids — who goes on the invoice?
The parent, because they're the payer and legal client. List the parent's name and address on the invoice. In the description you can reference the student ("Maths tutoring [student name], 4 lessons March") so the parent sees who the invoice is for.
VAT or no VAT on tutoring invoices?
For general academic tutoring of private students there's often a VAT exemption in the Netherlands, provided you meet the tax authority's requirements. For business clients (companies sending employees for upskilling), the standard rate usually applies. Using the small business scheme (KOR), you charge no VAT in either case. When unsure: ask the tax authority or a tax advisor.
