Questions painters often ask
How do I invoice extra work that comes up during the job?
Always agree on extra work in writing before you do it — a text message is enough. On the invoice, put the extra work on separate lines with their own descriptions, so your client can see what was extra. For larger amounts, a separate "additional work" invoice is cleaner than mixing it in.
Materials and labor on one line, or separately?
Separately. Labor sometimes falls under the 9% VAT rate (for work on homes older than two years in the Netherlands), while materials usually stay at 21%. Picking the right rate per line keeps the VAT breakdown correct, and your client sees exactly what the work cost versus what the materials cost.
I work via a housing association — who gets the invoice?
The party that gave you the assignment. Often that's the housing corporation directly, sometimes a contractor who hired you. On the invoice, list their name, address and registration / VAT number. Specific unit numbers or work addresses go in the description.
